King Goodwill Zwelithini, traditional leader of South Africa’s Zulu people, passed away on March 12, at the age of 72, due to health problems related to diabetes, his palace announced.
Zwelithini was born in a small town in the south-eastern KwaZulu Natal province of Nongoma. He ascended the throne after his father’s death, in 1971 during the Apartheid era, he was 23 at the time. He reigned for over 50 years, making him the longest-serving monarch of the Zulu nation, the largest ethnic group in South Africa, with a total of 12 million people, constituting about 18% of the population. Most of them live in the KwaZulu Natal province.
He was attached to Zulu traditions and customs. Although he did not hold any political power, he was a very influential man, especially among South Africa's rural population. He is for instance credited with getting involved and speaking openly to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic that ravaged South Africa in the 1980s and 1990s.
After Zwelithini’s funeral, President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to the King saying: “It was during his reign that the Zulu nation achieved harmony and peace. It was during his reign that his people alongside all the people of our country realised the dream of freedom from the injustices of colonialism and Apartheid”.
Zwelithini left behind him 6 wives and 28 children. His successor is not known yet.

Le roi et chef traditionnel du peuple zoulou d’Afrique du Sud, Goodwill Zwelithini, est mort le 12 mars dernier à 72 ans, après d’importants problèmes de santé liés à son diabète, a annoncé le Palais la semaine dernière.
Zwelithini est né dans une petite ville du sud-est de la province KwaZulu Natal appelé Nongoma. Il est monté sur le trône après la mort de son père, en 1971, pendant l'Apartheid, il avait alors 23 ans. Il a régné pendant plus de 50 ans, le plus long règne de l’histoire de la nation zouloue. Il s'agit du plus grand groupe ethnique d'Afrique du Sud, avec une population totale de 12 millions de personnes, environ 18% de la population du pays. La plupart d'entre eux vivent dans la province du KwaZulu Natal.
Zwelithini était très attaché aux traditions et aux coutumes zouloues. Même s’il n’exerçait aucun pouvoir politique, c’était un homme extrêmement influent et principalement auprès des populations rurales. On lui attribue le mérite d'avoir appuyé des campagnes d’information afin de contrôler l'épidémie de VIH/SIDA qui ravageait l'Afrique du Sud dans les années 1980 et 1990.
Après les funérailles de Zwelithini, le président Cyril Ramaphosa a rendu hommage au roi en déclarant : "C'est sous son règne que la nation zouloue a atteint l'harmonie et la paix. C'est sous son règne que son peuple et tous les habitants de notre pays ont réalisé le rêve de se libérer des injustices du colonialisme et de l'Apartheid".
Zwelithini laisse derrière lui 6 épouses et 28 enfants. Son successeur n’a pas été désigné.
