Fight in the South Africa parliament

Members of an opposition party fought him with security officers, who expelled them
Thursday from Parliament, during the speech of Jacob Zuma.
Fistfights broke out in South Africa's National Assembly on Thursday because members of
the radical Economic Freedom Fighters’ party (EFF) were protesting against Jacob Zuma
and his party. The deputies disrupted for more than an hour the speech of Jacob Zuma,
considering that the president can’t speak like that to others people. Members of the
radical Economic Freedom Fighters' party (EFF), who are all dressed in red, scuffled with
security guards who ejected them from the parliament. Members of EFF said that Jacob
Zuma “scoundrel” and “rotten to the core” because of the corruption. The scenes unfolded
on national television.
This is the third consecutive year that the speech of Jacob Zuma is disrupted.
Outside parliament, police used stun grenades to disperse opposition and government
supporters because they attacked the Cap Town. This year, the President's speech was
held under high security, with 441 soldiers in support of the police forces, in order to
"maintain law and order" in the Parliament.

Three ministers demand Jacob Zuma resign

Three government ministers are reported to have called for the resignation of President Jacob Zuma.

The minister of tourism, of health and of public works started the conflict in proposing the resignation of Mr. Zuma. Then, the ANC direction, a 100-member bureau, met last Saturday. Nothing came out of this meeting, but internal sources said "the debate around the future of the President was heated". Some members would have requested to censure Jacob Zuma.

It seems the resignation bid is gathering momentum after the publication of a report showing his relation with the Gupta family. However, President Zuma still enjoys the support of a majority of ANC members despite his implication in a number of scandals.

Eskom boss Brian Molefe resigns

Eskom, the South African public electricity giant is in trouble. Its boss, Brian Molefe, has just announced his resignation. A decision that will take effect in January and that happens just two weeks after the publication of an important report. The report implicates Brian Molefe and the rich Gupta family in a corruption scandal. The Gupta family is close to President Jacob Zuma. Meanwhile the giant company is in great economy difficulty.

Mr. Molefe said “I am confident that, when the time comes, I will be able to show that I have done nothing wrong and that my name will be cleared” a statement that was met with public skepticism.

Molefe's 9.5 million Rand bonus (620,000 euro), which was due in June 2018 if he met performance requirements, could be paid to him in January. Eskom's policy states that executives forfeit their shares if they do not remain for the duration of the three-year period, except if there are other reasons.

President Zuma mired in corruption scandal

Last week, President Zuma was implicated in a corruption scandal after the revelation of a 355-page report denouncing acts of corruption by the Gupta family, a family of rich businessmen. They corrupted a number of ministers and officials to make money and take control of South Africa. The report was revealed by public protector Thuli Madonsela and features testimonies, telephone logs and other evidence.

It shows Mr. Gupta, tried to bribe Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonasin with 600,000Rand if he accepted the post of finance minister, which he refused.

The appointed minister was Mr. Des Van Rooyen. The telephone records show than he was in the Gupta house, seven times including the day of his appointment. After the revelation, crowds took to the street in Pretoria. But, police fired water cannon to disperse protesters who were marching on Mr Zuma’s main office to demand his resignation.

Priest Injured in Student Protest

A priest has been injured after being shot in the face with rubber bullets. He refused to allow police entry onto church grounds to arrest students seeking refuge during a university protest.

Police fired tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets at protesters who were voicing frustration over the cost of university education at a Johannesburg university. Local media said 20 people were injured and 15 arrested.

During the police intervention, some students took refuge in a church. Police pursued the students, trying to hide behind a wall. When the pastor, Mr. Pugin, tried to enter in the church, the police shot him. The pastor said “I thought they would know that it was a bad idea to shoot a priest with a white robe, just at the church door”.

South Africa welcomes its first solar-powered airport

A few months ago, George, a city of 150,000 residents on South Africa's south coast welcomed its first solar-powered airport last Friday.

The control tower, escalators, check-in desks, baggage carousels, restaurants and ATMs, all depend on a small solar power station, located a few hundred metres away in a field of dandelions.

Its 2,000 solar panels produce up to 750 kiloWatts a day, easily surpassing the 400 kiloWatts needed to run the airport.

The excess is sent into the municipal power grid, and a computer screen in the terminal informs passengers: "Within a month, 274 houses have been supplied through this system with green electricity."

Its owner now plans on increasing the capacity of the power station by 250 more kiloWatts and will soon install batterieswhich will conserve energy generated during the day for night use

George Airport was originally built in apartheid-era South Africa in 1977 but it has only now been converted into a solar-powered airport.
This type of facility is the second in the world, after Cochin airport in Southern India

NWU to reopen

The Mafikeng campus of the North West University is expected to reopen. The decision comes after the school was closed for more than a month due to students' protests. Damage worth R150 million was caused to a Science Centre and Administration after it was set alight.
Professor Kgwadi, vice chancellor said there should be further disruptions; the institution will stay close for the semester. “We cannot guarantee to produce a degree in three weeks, therefore the best way to protect the quality. We will have to close the campus down,”said Kgwadi. He added that they were going to close the campus down for the rest of the semester due to the fact that they cannot “microwave” a degree.

Fire could cost wine farmers dear

Violent fires have propagated since Thursday night in the Del Haim farm near Cape Town Region.
Some people think that it is just about a disaster bound to Mother Nature, whereas others, such as the policemen for example, think that it was deliberately started.
The fire is being contained, but the effects could last long after it has been put out.
The fact that it decimated South Africa's wine region could further hamper the country’s already ailing currency and declining economy.
South Africa's currency has been in decline, and currently at its lowest in seven years against the dollar.
The incident comes as the country is coping with a string of gloomy predictions about its economic growth and the South African Rand has plummeted against foreign currencies, all the more so since agriculture is an important sector of South Africa's economy and yields about 12 percent to the yearly gross domestic product (GDP).
Wine Farmer Victor Sperling whose family owns the Del Haim farm near Stellenbosch said 95% of their forestry business had been destroyed.
"We're trying to save the remaining 5% but it's not looking good," he said as helicopters dropped hundreds of litres of water to try to douse the flames.
The loss of the family’s forestry business after 16 years of nurturing and growing is estimated at about 3.5m Rand. If the trees had reached maturity, Mr. Sterling said the value would have increased fivefold.

Keep your meat ! / Barack, garde ta barbaque !

United States and South Africa trade and veterinary experts held a last-ditch telephonic conference to try to remove the last barriers preventing the importing into SA of US chicken, pork and beef.

SA is indeed a member of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which aims at to assisting the economies of sub-Saharan African to improve economic relations. While South Africa exports mainly citrus and wine, the US has already exported tons of meat.
This legislation obviously brought a huge infusion of help to countries in Africa - to erase hunger – and to the American economy. Nevertheless, SA said stop.

SA has allowed virtually no US chicken, pork or beef imports into the local market for many years, partly through anti-dumping duties and partly through health restrictions.
In June last year officials from both sides agreed to lift the anti-dumping duties on US chicken imports, to allow a quota of 65,000 tons a year to be imported.
But the South African government continued to block chicken imports anyway because of outbreaks of avian flu and later because of concerns about salmonella infection. It has also been citing concerns about diseases in pork and beef to block imports of those products.

On November 5, US President Barack Obama announced that the United States would suspend South Africa’s Agoa agricultural benefits on January 4 unless Pretoria lifted the ban on US meat imports before then.

On January 4, Rob Davies -the South African Trade and Industry Minister said at a press conference in Pretoria that "South Africa recognises that it is in “extra time” over negotiations over the African Growth and Opportunity Act", that "the trade and industry minister will continue talks" and that "he still believes that a breakthrough would be made even though deadlines imposed by the US have been reached".

It is not clear yet how much exports would be reduced by the loss of AGOA benefits, but it could be a lot as profit margins on agricultural products sales in the US are slim and so the lack of import duties makes a big difference.

                                                                                                                                        M.s

Nelson Mandela's nephew in jail
Nelson Mandela’s nephew who serves as king of the Thembu clan began a 12 year prison sentence on Thursday for waging a “reign of terror” over his people in South Africa.
King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo was found guilty of kidnapping, assault and arson. After 27 years on the throne, he is the first of South Africa’s ten recognised kings to go to jail.
King Dalindyebo’s offence took place about two decades ago when he summoned one of his subjects to appear before his traditional court.
When the man failed to present himself, King Dalindyebo responded in what he said was a traditional fashion. He kidnapped one of the absconder’s female relatives along with six of her children, burnt down their home and personally assaulted four youths, one of whom later died.

South Africa : An important mediator in Paris Agreement

After the excitement around the news of the success of the COP21, press conferences were linked showing us very satisfied and optimistic heads of state as for these agreements. It is thus on the occasion of one of these conferences that the South Africa’s Jacob Zuma expressed himself on the role of South Africa in the COP21

« The historic accord reached in Paris to stop Earth warming wouldn’t have been possible without South Africa playing a big role » according to President Jacob Zuma.
This would not have been possible if South Africa had not delivered the outcomes it did as President of COP17 ‚ held in Durban in 2011. The success in Paris is the culmination of the watershed of Durban Climate Change Conference in 2011 where Parties to the Convention agreed to the mandate for the Paris Agreement‚” Zuma said in a statement on Sunday.
He congratulated South Africans for their contribution to finding solutions to a big challenge.

Then he continued by saying that the climate change was a serious  threat to developing countries’ ability to ensure that their population were got out of poverty. It had consequently been a great honour for South Africa to play such a key role at both the beginning and at the end of the process through which the international community had worked toward reaching this historic solution.
Then he ended up by saying that The agreement was a big step forward in committing all countries to act decisively against climate change. Through this agreement‚ hope had been restored for a safe and prosperous future‚ where Earth’s health change would be adequately addressed.

Sunday, 6 December
Prince Harry’s Touching Tribute to Former President Nelson Mandela
On Thursday 3rd december, Prince Harry ended his 7-day tour of the country by visiting the Nelson Mandela Foundation Centre of Memory in Johannesburg. He was introduced to Mr Mandela's widow Graca Machel  who made him visited The Nelson Mandela Foundation
The Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg is home to a permanent museum about the statesman's life and features a striking black and white photographic exhibition about the fight against apartheid.
There, Harry was shown documents, photos and artefacts from the life of the world leader affectionately known as Madiba.
he was instantly attracted to an image of his late mother, Diana Princess of Wales, pictured with the late African president and was left feeling nostalgic .He learned that the photo was taken in Cape Town in 1997, when they met to discuss the growing HIV and AIDS crisis in Africa
He says in his tribute, " I cannot imagine a better way of ending my stay in South Africa where to join you in the afternoon to remember itself Madiba at the approach of the date of anniversary of its death. I know he is missed by a generation, a nation and most keenly by his family. However, he will never be forgotten." Then he recalled his time with the leader by saying "I was fortunate enough to meet Madiba a number of years ago and I have treasured that memory ever since. He was someone you just wanted to cuddle, discuss with and never let him go. I have been keen to see how Mr. Mandela's values and his legacy are inspiring the next generation and shaping the future for South Africa," he declared.
Last but not least, the 31-year-old prince talked « directly » to the people of South Africa. He tells them, "I would like to end by thanking all the South Africans I have met over the last few days for their warm welcome and hospitality. I look forward to seeing you again soon."

SOUTH AFRICA and COP 21

As each year, an international conference about the environment is organised by the United Nations. This year the COP21 (Conference of the Parties) will be held in Paris, France from November 30 to December 11 and 140 heads of state will attend this meeting about Climate Change.

“The president will attend the heads of state and government segment on the 30th of November,” said the presidency in a statement.

South Africa is ranked 30th in the world for bad air quality and Johannesburg, the country worst polluted city, is the 99th in the world. The country must think about solutions to reduce pollution.

SA also is a major actor in this event because she is an active member of the Group 77, a loose coalition of developing nations (Basic*), designed to promote its members' collective economic interests and create an enhanced negotiating capacity in the United Nations.
South Africa has the special responsibility to share the interests of developing countries in the negotiations for the Paris agreement

This necessitated defending the legal rights of developing countries and receiving the support they required to make the transition to a low carbon economy and to adapt to the reality of a climate that was already changing and damage associated with this.

“Such as South Africa, these countries are not able to realise this potential on their own. Finance will be of central importance to the Paris outcome and has to be an integral part of the agreement itself,” Zuma said.”

For developing countries it can be difficult to reconcile sustainable development and economic expansion. This is why the presence of Jacob Zuma at COP21 is essential. He will be accompanied by Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa.

SOUTH AFRICA DIVIDED ABOUT EDUCATION

11 novembre 2015

In Johannesburg, Pretoria or Cape Town, South African students have never been more determined in their protest against university fees increase.

Three weeks ago on Wednesday 21 October 2015 after storming the parliament in Cape Town, the students of many of the country's universities were fired at by riot police.
Afterwards, President Jacob Zuma announced that there would be no fee increases for another year. He also promised to speed up reform in the country's education system, which protesters claim still looks like the old apartheid system.

However, this is not enough for the students. They are now fighting for tuition free and denouncing subcontracting of universities employee (cleaners, security guard...).

On Tuesday 22 October, the country was moved to tears after white students formed a human shield around black demonstrators to protect them from the police.
The group of protesters were taking part in the ongoing #feesmustfall campaign at the Eastcape Midlands College and white students from neighbouring Rhodes University surrounded them.

The last events in South Africa show that the country is divided: on one side the “Born Free” generation with no experience of apartheid, united and ready toprompt change and on the other, the old guard and the African National Congress’s (ANC).
The Chancellor of the Wits College also asked the students to focus on their end of year exams.

Storm destroys hundreds of houses in Limpopo
Hundreds of people in Limpopo were left homeless after their houses were damaged by a storm that saw the roofs of at least 200 houses blown off.
The storm saw huge, tennis ball sized hailstones shatter roofs and destroy properties.
Disaster Management in Limpopo wants the government to build new houses for families.
Many victims were still trying to rebuild their homes days after the devastating storm, but inspectors said some of the damaged buildings posed a serious risk. The Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs warned residents to prepare for the possibility of more severe thunderstorms in the province.
The provincial disaster management centre said homes in part of the Sekhukhune and Mopani districts were the ones hardest hit hard by the storm.
110 houses were left without roofs in the districts of Mopani and 34 houses in Apel village.
Temporary shelter has been provided and officials are also in the process of handing over food parcels.
The government said that Limpopo is likely to be hit again by a climate anomaly.

Mots nouveaux : hailstones (grélons), shatter (frapper, percuter, fracasser), hand over (donner).

University ends teaching in Afrikaans after protests

On November 13, 2015, University of Stellenbosch adopted English as main language after acknowledging that Afrikaans was a language linked with apartheid. English will be the main language students learn with Afrikaans as additional language. The education authorities announced their decision after a viral video about racism faced by black students on the campus became popular.

A large movement fighting against rising tuition fees recently spread in South Africa.
Stellenbosch University played a main role in the development of an apartheid policy. It was there that a professor helped to define the racial ideology that became apartheid.

The university said in a statement: "The primary language of communication and administration at Stellenbosch University will be English, with Afrikaans and IsiXhosa as additional languages".

It added: "At Stellenbosch University we intend using language in a way that is oriented towards engagement with knowledge in a diverse society and to ensure equitable access to learning and teaching opportunities for all students".
