35 years for an attempt on the former President’s life.
On Tuesday, a South African court sentenced the leaders of a far-right movement called “Boeremag” (Boer Force) to 35 years in jail for an assassination attempt on the former South African president Nelson Mandela 11 years ago. The trial took place in the same court where 49 years ago Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life under the apartheid.
They had planned an attack against the former president which killed one and injured several.
The extremist group aimed to overthrow the government by killing the President. When he was on a visit, the extremists placed a bomb on his way but it never detonated. However, the group caused nine explosions during the night of 29 to 30 October 2002 in the popular black township of Soweto, a southwestern district of Johannesburg, aiming at a mosque, railway stations, bus stops and railway tracks. A woman died and her companion was wounded.
“They almost succeeded. It was close” an investigator said during the hearings.
The sentences range from 10 to 35 years for twenty extremists among which the five leaders of the group who were sentenced to the maximum 35 years.

35 ans de prison pour avoir tenté d’assassiner Nelson Mandela.
Ce mardi la justice sud-africaine a condamné les leaders d’un groupe d’extrême droite appelé Boeremag (Force Boer) à 35 ans de prison pour avoir tenté d’assassiner l’ancien président Nelson Mandela il y a 11 ans. Le procès a eu lieu dans le même tribunal où Nelson Mandela 49 ans plus tôt avait été condamné à perpétuité sous l’apartheid.
Ils avaient planifié un attentat contre l’ancien président qui avait fait un mort et plusieurs blessés. Le groupe extrémiste avait pour objectif de renverser le gouvernement en assassinant le président. Lors d’un de ses déplacements, les extrémistes avaient placé une bombe sur la route mais elle ne fut jamais déclenchée pour le plus grand bonheur de l’Afrique du sud.
En revanche le groupe fut à l’origine de neuf explosions pendant la nuit du 29 au 30 octobre 2002 dans le quartier populaire à majorité noire de Soweto, au sud-ouest de Johannesburg, visant une mosquée, des gares, des arrêts de bus et voies de chemin de fer. Une femme y trouva la mort et son compagnon fut blessé.
« Ils ont failli réussir. C’était à deux doigts » a précisé un enquêteur durant l’audience.
Les condamnations vont de 10 à 35 ans pour les vingt extrémistes dont les cinq leaders du groupe qui ont écopé de la peine maximale de 35 ans.
