Kidnapper, Murderer and Rapist

A man was arrested about 6km from Taung, in the North, on Thursday 20 November. The 21-year old man is accused of killing a 41-year old man and raping a woman.

His accomplice was killed in a confrontation with the police, as he was trying to stab policeman who came to arrest him. 

The two men kidnapped a 41-year old man and his wife, on Sunday 16 November. The man was taken from the car and shot dead and the woman was raped. The man’s body was found Tuesday in a river near a local village. The woman was taken near Dry Harts, in the North and found alive.

The accused man is expected to appear in court soon on charges of hijacking, kidnapping, murder, and rape.

Un home a été arrêté à 6km de Taung, dans le nord du pays, jeudi 20 novembre. L’homme de 21 ans est accusé d’avoir assassiné un homme de 41ans et d’avoir violé sa femme.

Son complice a été tué dans un affrontement avec la police, alors qu’il tentait de poignarder des policiers venus l’arrêter.

Les deux hommes avaient kidnappé un homme de 41ans et sa femme dimanche 16 novembre. L’homme a été enlevé de la voiture et abattu et la femme violée. Le corps de l’homme a été retrouvé mardi 18 dans une rivière près d’un village des alentours. La femme a été emmenée près de Dry Harts, dans le nord et retrouvée vivante.

L’homme accusé devrait comparaitre devant le tribunal bientôt, sur des accusations de vol, enlèvement, assassinat et viol.

South Africa’s rhinos are facing a disaster from poachers who sell their horns on the Asian market. About 980 rhinos have already been killed this year and the nation is trying to find a solution to preserve the animal.                                                                 

 

In 2013, 1,004 rhinos were killed and this year’s statistics will be released soon. The government has arrested many people suspected of poaching, including six suspects last weekend.                                                                                          

 

Some conservationists suggested that private rhino owners should be authorized to sell their rhino horns, but from a living animal and at a rate of about one kilogram per year. This proposal was not accepted by markets in Asia where the horns are well-known for their supposed medical benefits.                                                                                      

 

Pelham Jones who is the President of the Private Rhino Owners Association said that this proposal is criticized because some of the rhino owners are cruel and insensitive with their animals. He said his association came to this conclusion after intensive research.                                                                                      

 

Whatever the solution, it’s clear that the stakes are high for all people committed to saving this animal.

Les rhinocéros d'Afrique du Sud sont victimes d’un massacre perpétré par les braconniers, qui vendent leurs cornes sur le marché asiatique. Environ 980 rhinocéros sont déjà morts cette année, mais la nation essaie de trouver une solution pour sauver l’espèce.                                                                                      

 

En 2013, 1004 rhinocéros ont été abattus et le bilan de cette année va bientôt être publié. Les autorités ont arrêté de nombreuses personnes soupçonnées de braconnage dont six ce week-end.

 

Certains écologistes proposent que les propriétaires privés de rhinocéros soient autorisés à en vendre les cornes, mais issues d'un animal vivant et à un rythme d'environ un kilo par an. Cette proposition n'a pas été acceptée par les marchés en Asie où les cornes sont réputées avoir des vertus médicinales.

 

Pelham Jones, le président de l'Association des propriétaires privés de rhinocéros a déclaré que cette proposition était critiquée car certains propriétaires sont cruels et insensibles envers leurs animaux. Il a déclaré que son association est arrivée à cette conclusion après une enquête sur le terrain.

Quelle que soit la solution, il est clair que l’enjeu est important pour tous ceux qui luttent pour sauver cet animal mythique.

Comploteurs condamnés

            Le 7 novembre dernier, deux ex-dirigeants du Parti Fédéral de la Liberté (FVP), parti politique de l’extrême droite blanche, ont été condamnés à huit ans de prison. Ils sont accusés d’avoir préparé des attentats contre le président Jacob Zuma.

La justice a reconnu coupable Johan Prinsloo, ex-responsable de la FVP, et l’a condamné pour « haute trahison et recel de munitions ». La peine est la même pour Marc Trollip, un autre ancien dirigeant du parti qui avait plaidé coupable de conspiration.

Deux suspects échappent à la condamnation

            Un troisième accusé a été libéré car reconnu mentalement inapte à comparaitre et les charges à son encontre ont été abandonnées.

Les charges retenues contre le dernier suspect, Hein Boonzaaier, ex-président du parti, ont été également abandonnées faute de preuve, selon le porte-parole du Parti National sud-africain.

Toutes ces personnes avaient été arrêtées en décembre 2012, la police les suspectant de préparer des attentats contre le Président Zuma, son adjoint, des ministres et des responsables du Congrès national africain (ANC), le parti au pouvoir.

 

Prison for plotters

            On November 7, two ex-leaders of the Federale Vryheidsparty (FVP), a white extreme right political party, were sentenced to eight years in prison. They were accused of planning attacks against President Jacob Zuma.

The tribunal convicted Johan Prinstoo, the former head of the FVP, and condemned him for “treason and concealment of ammunition”. The penalty is the same for Marc Trollip, another former leader of the party who pleaded guilty for conspiracy.

Two suspects escape conviction

            A third accused was released because he wasn’t able, mentally, to appear in court and the charges against him were dropped.

The charges against the last suspect, Hein Boonzaalier, a former leader of the party, were also dropped for lack of evidence, according to the spokesman of the South Africa National Party.

All these people were arrested in December 2012, the police suspected them of planning attacks against President Zuma, his deputy, ministers and leaders of the African National Congress (ANC), the current majority party.
