Miss South Africa wins Miss Universe beauty pageant

On Sunday 8 December, Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi was awarded the title of Miss Universe.

This edition of the contest brought together ninety candidates and took place in Atlanta in the United States.

The young woman is 26 years old, she was born in Tsolo, Eastern Cape, and raised in the village of Sidwadweni before moving to Cape Town. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in public relations and image management from Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Tunzi belongs to the first generation to grow up under a democratic government and after apartheid ended in South Africa. She explained that it was very important for her to win without wearing a wig or weaves but with her natural hair. "I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful. I think that it is time that that stops today," she said.

Tunzi is also an activist against gender violence and she is working with the United Nations on the "HeforShe" campaign (global solidarity movement for gender equality) while South Africa has to fight against a lot of gender-based violence and a lot of femicides.

Tunzi joins Miss World, Miss America, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA to make history together as the first five black women to wear the crowns at the same time.

It is interesting to notice that this pageant has also made history with Miss Myanmar, Swe Zin Htet, who is the first openly gay contestant.



Miss Afrique du sud, nouvelle Miss Univers

Dimanche 8 décembre, Miss Afrique du Sud Zozibini Tunzi a remporté le titre de Miss Univers.

Cette édition du concours a réuni 90 candidates et s'est déroulée à Atlanta aux États-Unis.

La jeune femme a 26 ans et elle est née à Tsolo, Eastern Cape, et a grandi dans le village de Sidwadweni avant de déménager au Cap. Elle a obtenu un diplome universitaire en relations publiques et gestion de l'image à l'Université de technologie de Cape Peninsula.

Tunzi fait partie de la première génération à avoir grandi sous un gouvernement démocratique et après la fin de l'apartheid en Afrique du Sud. Elle a expliqué qu'il était très important pour elle de gagner sans porter de perruque ou d’extensions mais avec ses cheveux naturels. "J'ai grandi dans un monde où une femme qui me ressemble, avec mon type de peau et mes cheveux, n'a jamais été considérée comme belle. Je pense qu'il est temps que cela s'arrête aujourd'hui", a-t-elle déclaré.

Tunzi est également une militante contre la violence du genre et elle travaille avec les Nations Unies sur leur campagne "HeforShe" (mouvement mondial de solidarité pour l'égalité des genres) tandis que l'Afrique du Sud doit lutter contre beaucoup de violences basées sur le genre et beaucoup de féminicides.

Tunzi rejoint Miss Monde, Miss Amérique, Miss USA et Miss Teen USA pour entrer ensemble dans l'histoire en tant que cinq premières femmes noires à porter les couronnes en même temps.

Il est intéressant de noter que ce concours a également marqué l'histoire avec Miss Myanmar, Swe Zin Htet, qui est la première candidate ouvertement lesbienne.
