ANC celebrates its 100th anniversary
A weekend of festivities is underway in South Africa to mark the 100th anniversary of the African National Congress (ANC ), the liberation movement that overthrew apartheid.
Jacob Zuma, the ongoing South African President welcomed African leaders at a gala dinner in the city of Bloemfontein.
Among the 1500 invited guests, was Rev. Jesse Jackson, the American civil rights activist.
The ANC has been the ruling political party in South Africa since the end of Apartheid in 1994.
It was founded a century ago, just as the government began a systematic oppression of black people which continued for nearly 80 years.
The ANC was banned in the 1960s and its leaders, including Nelson Mandela, were thrown in prison.
When he was released, Mandela went on to become South Africa’s first post-apartheid President.
Some commentators think that the ANC has become an elite club while the wealth of most South Africans has hardly grown since 1985 and unemployment is over 40 percent.

L’ANC est le parti politique dominant en Afrique du sud depuis la fin de l’apartheid, en 1994.
Il a été fondé il y a un siècle au moment même où le gouvernement a commencé une oppression systématique des populations noires qui a continué près de 80 ans.
L’ANC a été interdite dans les années 1960 et ses dirigeants, y compris Nelson Mandela, emprisonnés.
Quand il a été libéré, Mandela est devenu le premier président de l’Afrique du sud post Apartheid.
Pour certains, l’ANC est devenu un club d’élite alors que le pouvoir d'achat de la plupart des sud-africains a peu évolué depuis les années 1980 et que le taux de chômage dépasse les 40 pour cent.
