On
November 13, 2015, University of Stellenbosch adopted English as main
language after acknowledging that Afrikaans was a language linked
with apartheid. English will be the main language students learn with
Afrikaans as additional language. The education authorities announced
their decision after a viral video about racism faced by black
students on the campus became popular.
A
large movement fighting against rising tuition fees recently spread
in South Africa.
Stellenbosch
University played a main role in the development of an apartheid
policy. It was there that a professor helped to define the racial
ideology that became apartheid.
The
university said in a statement: "The primary language of
communication and administration at Stellenbosch University will be
English, with Afrikaans and IsiXhosa as additional languages".
It
added: "At Stellenbosch University we intend using language in a
way that is oriented towards engagement with knowledge in a diverse
society and to ensure equitable access to learning and teaching
opportunities for all students".

Le
13 novembre 2015, l'Université de Stellenbosch a adopté l'anglais
comme langue principale après avoir reconnu que l'afrikaans était
une langue liée à l'apartheid. L'anglais sera la première langue
que les élèves apprendront et parleront avec l'afrikaans comme
langue secondaire. Le rectorat a pris sa décision après la
diffusion d’une vidéo virale sur les réseaux sociaux dénonçant
le racisme sur son campus.
Un
grand mouvement de protestation contre l'augmentation des frais de
scolarité secoue actuellement le pays.
L'Université
de Stellenbosch a joué un grand rôle dans le développement d'une
politique d'apartheid. C'est là qu'un professeur a contribué à
définir l'idéologie du système.
L'université
a déclaré dans un communiqué : « La première langue de
communication et d'administration à l'université de Stellenbosch
sera l'anglais, avec l'afrikaans et l' IsiXhosa comme langues
additionnelles. »
L'établissement
a ajouté : « A l'Université de Stellenbosch, nous comptons
utiliser la langue pour tenir nos engagements culturels dans une
société de diversité et pour garantir un accès équitable à
l’enseignement pour tous les étudiants. »
