Salary take-off

After one week of strike staged since last Friday by the trade unions (Metalworkers Union of SA and SA Cabin Crew Association), SSA (South African Airways) employees got what they hoped for, that is an eight percent salary increase across the board, insourcing of workers and job security for at least three years.

The strike started because the company wanted to lay off 20% of its workforce - to reduce operating costs by R700 million.

Thanks to the agreement signed on Friday employees who earned less than one million rand per year (approximatively 61,600 euros) will get a salary increase of 5.9%.

Because of this strike, the airline company lost fifty million rand per day, which jeopardized the negotiations. The airline company announced that the usual traffic would be partially restored on Saturday and would be fully operational on Sunday. Nevertheless, the company will not be able to pay a part of the November wages because of the events. After the strike, the company apologized for the problems caused and assured that the assistance would be provided to the clients who were unable to fly.

Quand les salaires décollent aussi

Depuis une semaine, les deux principaux syndicats (Metalworkers Union of SA et SA Cabin Crew Association) de la South African Airways (SSA) avaient lancé un mot d’ordre de grève. Les employés demandaient une hausse de 8% de leur salaire et pour tout le personnel ainsi que le renforcement de la promotion interne et une garantie de sécurité de l’emploi d’au moins trois ans. La grève avait commencé car la compagnie aérienne voulait supprimer 20% des postes pour réduire ses coûts d'exploitation de 700 millions de rands. Grâce à l’accord signé ce vendredi, les employés gagnant un salaire inférieur à 1 million de rands (environ 61.000 euros) recevront une augmentation de 5.9%.

A cause de cette grève, la compagnie a indiqué qu’elle avait perdu 50 millions de rands par jour ce qui compromettait les négociations. La compagnie a annoncé que le trafic habituel reprendrait samedi et retournerait à la normale dimanche.

En revanche, elle a annoncé qu’elle ne pourrait pas payer certains salaires de novembre à cause de la grève. Suite à ces évènements, la compagnie s’est excusée auprès de ces clients pour les problèmes engendrés et a assuré qu’elle aiderait les voyageurs qui n’ont pas pu partir à trouver un nouveau vol.
