The king is dead
Zwelonke Mpendulo Sigcawu died on November 14th 2019 and his funerals took place on Friday November 29th.
Born on April 4th 1968, he was, since 2006 the king of the Xhosa ethnic group which is the second most important ethnic group in South Africa among about ten ethnic groups with the Zoulous (the most importante in the country), the Swazi, the Ndebele, the Basotho, the Vendas, the Afrikaner and the Metis.
Among famous people from Xhosa ethnic group there are for instance former president Nelson Mandela and the archbishop Desmond Tutu.
His national funerals have been a mix of traditional and military honors, South African National Defence Force (SANDF) held his coffin.
Former president Thabo Mbeki, also from Xhosa ethnic group, spoke about Zwelonke Mpendulo Sigcawu’s life dedicated to fight against societal problems faced by the country.
He worked his whole life to promote education, cultural heritage, agriculture, tourism, rural development…
His funerals were also the occasion for the king of the Ndebele ethnic group to challenge the current president Cyril Ramaphosa because the governement is neglecting traditional leaders, some of them dying in poverty.
Zwelonke Mpendulo Sigcawu who suffered from a long illness had to pay for his medical bills.
The name of his succesor hasn’t yet been announced.

Zwelonke Mpendulo Sigcawu est mort le 14 novembre 2019 et ses funérailles ont eu lieu vendredi 29 novembre.
Né le 4 avril 1968, il était depuis 2006 roi de l’ethnie Xhosa deuxième ethnie la plus importante en Afrique du sud qui en compte une dizaine avec les Zoulous (la plus importante du pays), les Swazi, les Ndebele, les Basotho, les Vendas, les Afrikaners et les Metis.
Parmi les personnalités d’origine Xhosa figure par exemple l’ancien président Nelson Mandela et l’archevêque Desmond Tutu.
Ses funérailles nationales ont été un mélange de tradition et d’honneur militaire, son cercueil a été porté par des militaires de force de défense d’Afrique du sud.
L’ancien président Thabo Mbeki ,également d’origine Xhosa, a évoqué sa vie consacrée aux problèmes de société rencontré dans le pays.
Il a œuvré toute sa vie pour promouvoir l’éducation, l’héritage culturel, l’agriculture, le tourisme, le développement rural…
Ses funérailles ont également été l’occasion pour le roi des Ndebele d’interpeler l’actuel président Cyril Ramaphosa : le gouvernement négligerait les leaders tribaux dont certains meurent dans la pauvreté. Zwelonke Mpendulo Sigcawu qui a lutté contre une longue maladie devait lui-même payer ses factures médicales.
Son successeur n’a pas encore été désigné.
